It's back for 2007

Women/Ladies/Girls, this one's just for you!

Given that such a large number of female athletes now enter our events over the year with many more wanting to give triathlon a go, we've decided that the girls deserve their own event. Consequently we're very excited about staging our second TIMEX WomenOnly Triathlon on Saturday 12th July at Dorney Lake, Eton in support of Breast Cancer Care. So, now's the time to grab your girlfriends and make sure you're part of an event that is going to give you the ultimate feeling of achievement.

The triathlon will be held at the Olympic rowing venue for the 2012 Olympic Games. Dorney Lake offers a clean open water swim, followed by a closed bike loop around the Lake, and finally the run goes down the side of the lake, making it the perfect course for beginners and seasoned triathletes alike. It's great for spectators, they can see you on each lap.

Our aim is to stage an event that caters for all abilities and ages and also to creates a friendly, fun, non-intimidating environment.

There are three distances available and each of them can be entered as an individual depending on how big a challenge you want. The Challenge distance can be also part of a relay team. The distances include:

Novice: swim 200m, bike 5km, run 2.5km
Sprint: swim 400m, 20km, run 5km
Challenge: swim 800m, bike 30km, run 7.5k
Relay Challenge (2-3 people): swim 800m, bike 30km, run 7.5k

We are offering full online entry for this event through our online event entry service.

Women v Men - Did you know.?

One of the key differentiators between women's equipment for triathlon and men's is the bike. Here are some facts that you might not know:

  • Women exert approximately 25% more force on their lower backs than men, when riding a bike in the same position - this is nothing to do with us women being stronger or weaker, it's just that our hip sockets are placed further forward in the pelvis than a man's.
  • In general a woman's shoulders are less muscular than a man's and less weight can be comfortably accommodated by them - therefore in the more stretched out position of a man's bike, this extra weight put upon the shoulders by leaning further forward, can cause shoulder and neck pain.
  • Weight distribution differs from women to men; a man's centre of gravity is closer to his shoulders, while a woman's is closer to her hips; this has effects on both ride comfort and handling.

So, with this in mind, if you're keen to take up triathlon and spend time training on your bike, you should seriously consider a bike tailored specifically for you. Bike manufacturers such as Specialized have a range dedicated to women, and it's not just a change of contact points, saddle, grips etc. the whole frame geometry has been designed around a woman's anatomy.
